Protecting your Brand on the internet used to mean securing your domain name/s but with the advent of Web 2.0 and Social Networking sites there are thousands of websites on the web that allow you to create a personal or company profile. These sites vary from business networking like LinkedIn, photo sharing sites like Flickr, Social Networking sites like Facebook to Micro Blogging like Twitter.

There is no way you can explore all of these sites to evaluate how, (if in any way), you can use them to promote your business online with social media marketing.  What you need to do and sooner rather than later is protect your business or brand just like you have done with your domain name/s.

Imagine a disgruntled employee or competitor creating accounts under your company name and posting harmful information about your company, this could cause a public relations disaster.  There are also individuals squatting on brand names on social networking sites so that they can hopefully sell on the account for a premium.

Another reason to create a full profile with photos, bio, URL and description on social networking sites is to increase the number of links into your website.

There is an increase in sites now selling packages where they secure your brands social networking accounts, create your vanity URL, inbound link and populate all account information. The most visible sites offering this service are:
